Almond oil - an all-rounder for body care and cell protection

Ever since antiquity, the production of almond oil has been known, likewise the positive effects that it has on the human body. Almond oil can be obtained from both almond tree varieties, but only the sweet almond oil is suitable for consumption in larger quantities. Today the oil of bitter almonds is mostly used as an essential oil in the confectionary, liqueur and perfume industry. The fields of application of sweet almond oil on the other hand, ranges from lubricants in precision mechanics to cosmetic products and even to medical applications. In the kitchen almond oil is suitable for dressings and because of its light almond flavor for desserts, too. It is very well tolerated and does not only support the digestion but also the entire metabolism, strengthens the immune system and protects the vessels. 

Good tolerability through fatty acids

Almond oil is particularly used in cosmetics, either as a pure product or as a component. The very high percentage of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids positively influences the skin and supports its elasticity. The fatty acids are similar in structure to the human skin fat and are therefore well tolerated. Over 80 percent of these fatty acids are oleic acids. Due to their molecular structure, these are characterized by their high mobility, which allows the oil acids to penetrate the horny layer. Therefore, almond oil is particularly suitable for dry and scaly skin. The linoleic acid also supports the moisture balance of the skin and its resistance. Together with palmitic acid, which is important for the skin's protective acid mantle, linoleic acid effects the good tolerability of almond oil for all skin types – even for the very sensitive baby skin. Since almond oil is also effective in inflamed skin folds and small skin cracks, it is used in the medical treatment of skin problems, such as acne and atopic dermatitis.

All-rounder in human nutrition

Almond oil is not only a multitalent in regards to external application but has also positive effects in the nutrition sector. Here, too, the already mentioned fatty acids play an essential role. The good tolerability is noticeable when taking almond oil, because the fatty acids can quickly be absorbed into human cell membranes. This supports the cell in its barrier function and has a positive effect on the vessel walls. Heart diseases, caused by high blood sugar and cholesterol level, damage the vessel walls and studies have shown that regular consumption of almond oil has a positive effect on heart health. In addition to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, almond oil is used with intestinal disorders. It has a regulating effect on the digestion and soothes irritated mucous membranes. Due to its soothing effect, almond oil is frequently used in emulsions for the treatment of intestinal disorders. Furthermore, almond oil is rich in vitamins and minerals, which usefully complements a balanced diet and has a positive effect on the digestion. Vitamin B supports blood metabolism and the nervous system, whereas vitamin D contributes to the protection of the immune system and vitamin E protects the fatty acids of the almond oil from free radicals, thus functions as an antioxidant. Potassium helps in the regulation of blood pressure and cholesterol level, magnesium influences the digestion and stabilizes the cell membrane.
